Why do people agrue in favor of raising minimum wages?

It's either to help win votes for the politicans,from mexican illegals or college students with alot of student loans to pay off.Or it makes everybody else in the working cl who happens to make more than minimum wage like me actually get a bigger paycheck indirectly though community expectations.Albuquerque minium wage is $6.75 this year,pushes to $7.20 next year.So far thougth, I haven't really seen any price increases because of it.So I don't know if it is a good thing or not.
