So, what's your question? You're right, by the way, about the sound that a word like feel makes. But, it's not an English language inconsistency; it's our hearing that doesn't distinguish the break. Shakespeare caught some of these and often treated "one-syllable" double/extended vowel sounds as two syllable words. Speakers of other languages, especially speakers of languages that are tonal, hear the subtle vowel differences much better than we do. You say toh-may-toh; I say toh-mah-to, but they both mean the cute little red fruit that we call a vegetable. We English speakers are simply vowel tramps!
