Differential equation algorithm?? HELP PLEASE??!?

so, when it comes to maple, mathcad or matlab, how does the program which solves the differential equation work? i am talking about the general algorithm which solves the differential equations, not about a specific example or exercise. you might even refer only to the first order of differential equations. any clue will be greatly appreciated. my xmas plans are riding on this one... help! cheers
